Buying Property in Portugal Series (#2 of 4): Establishing a Team

Updated: Sep 3, 2019

One bad apple spoils the barrel, or so they say. When it comes to moving to another country where you may (or may not) have local contacts, it’s important to assemble the kind of team that has protecting your interests in mind.

That’s what’s good about Portugal, especially Porto. Most locals are friendly people, proud of their heritage, who try to help new people adapt to the local customs of doing business, making friends and enjoying life. Generally, the Portuguese way is to be friendly and pay attention to other people. That’s why tranquilo is such an important word…

However, as is human nature, the veritable ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ always lurks somewhere in the process. Either through inexperience, incompetence, a focus solely on profit motive, or an outrightly taciturn nature, a team member who is not on point can create massive problems in the purchase of a property.

Differing team members should work to protect you from those who do not value the quality of their work, or operate in ‘bad faith’. A suitable team member’s influence, connections, and attitude helps investors avoid those with their ‘mind on my money and my money on my mind’. For example, the fiscalização is an incredibly important part of the team. Their entire purpose is to ensure quality and attention to detail in the property refurbishment process.

The past year has seen us focused on cultivating a team that we trust and are willing to introduce to others. The wheat has been separated from the chaff, so to speak. In fact, our repeated experiences with them indicate that they can be trusted to do their best. However, that doesn’t mean that we haven’t included another member of our team to watch out for us against other members of the team. We would suggest any client do the same!

It’s not that people can’t be trusted, it’s just that, when moving to a place where everyone and everything is new, it’s possible to fall down a rabbit hole paved with good intentions. So far, we’re feeling that the personal connections forged (and maintained) have built a circle of trust, and as others from outside Portugal join us, we have the opportunity to help build trust in a wider number of social circles. DaHungryCouple hasn’t cultivated just a Golden Visa/Property Investment Team, we’ve planted the seeds for a team of people poised to ensure access to the same level of quality we required to investors who choose our service.
